Why every mumma needs essential oils

Two years ago I’d just had my third child. I was sleep deprived, stretched (in more ways than one), it was Winter and everyone kept getting sick. A close friend suggested I try essential oils and I thought she’d misunderstood my situation completely. I didn’t need a nice smelling house.

I needed a full time babysitter, massage therapist, chef, cleaner and / or to move to a tropical island. Despite my cynicism I ordered some oils. Fast forward to today and I’ll tell you essential oils have completely transformed how we live. I have my little army of bottles ready to support stress, sleep, anxiety; reduce our toxic load at home; and of course promote physical wellness. If it’s all sounding a little woo woo let’s take a little look at why they are a game changer.

The Lowdown

Essential oils are naturally occurring, volatile aromatic compounds found in the seeds, bark, stems, roots, flowers and other parts of plants (stay with me here). You can think of them as the immune system of the plant; and by extracting them we can use these compounds to help us maintain a healthy body and mind. And it works on big and little bodies equally as effectively with no side affects.

Why they work

There’s science behind why essential oils are so impactful on kids (and adults alike). When we inhale them they hit the olfactory bulb of our nose. This is connected to our limbic system – the control centre of our body responsible for our emotions. This is why they have the power to uplift moods, calm anxiety and reduce stress. They also work on cleansing the air from germs and promoting clear airways for colds and breathing congestion. Win and win.

Some fun facts

When applied topically on our skin essential oils:

  • Are absorbed through the skin in 20 seconds
  • Are present in our bloodstream within 2 minutes
  • Affect every cell that needs servicing in the body within 20 minutes

Our toxic homes

The air inside our homes is up to 5 times more toxic than the air outside (gasp in disgust) and it’s the chemicals in our cleaning, air fresheners and self care products that significantly contribute to these scary stats. Nasty chemicals in these products we use daily are being linked to a range of health concerns and it’s our kiddies at greatest harm because their immune and central nervous systems are still developing. But it’s not all doom and gloom as you can make some awesome DIY products simply using essential oils.

Not oils are created equal

When we’re looking at supporting our health with oils quality is everything. I only use doTERRA because they’re the highest quality oils available. They are 100% pure oil, third party tested and the only oils sourced where the plant or tree indigenously grows. It’s a very loosely regulated industry, so be an inquisitive buyer.

    Hi I’m really interested in the oils! Can you email me about the best ones to start with and how to use? I’m a mum of 2 young kids (4 & 1). My husband works away and very stressed! Would be great to have something for him also x
